Crisis: the real estate sector is ill, the moving sector has a cold !

The real estate sector is slowing down. This has its impact on the moving sector. "For some companies, it is becoming a matter of life and death," Nicole Martinet of the Official Belgian Removal Association confirms.

Especially on the level of individual moves, the consequences of the crisis are clearly noticeable. "People are postponing the purchase of a house or are managing the move themselves. But besides that, we are also feeling the competition coming from other sectors," she explains.

"Because the transportation sector is in dire straits, some transportation companies are aiming for other markets, such as the moving market." According to the Official Belgian Removal Association, which represents about 80% of the companies in this sector, some smaller companies specialized in individual moves are now in a situation of "life or death" because of the crisis. However, up to now, no company has had to shut down.

In the moving sector, another characteristic of the crisis is showing: some  entrepreneurs want to sell their company, but this appears to be impossible due to the lack of buying candidates.

On a job level, the situation has also changed. "We have always employed a lot of low-qualified people," says Mrs. Martinet. "Until last year, we were constantly asking for more personnel and it was difficult to fill some of the vacancies. Now this is no longer a problem. The chance of finding a job has become so small, that we can now count on much more qualified personnel."

On the market of the business-related moves, the pressure and the competition has also risen. "For the companies, it's now a matter of keeping the faith and being creative," Mrs. Martinet concludes.
